How to print barcode labels from Shopify
Shopify itself does not print product labels. Here is the full process with SGT, from choosing paper to a test print that lines up.
Before you start
- Every variant you print needs a SKU or a barcode. See how to add barcodes.
- Know your printer and label size: a thermal roll printer such as Zebra or DYMO, or sheet labels such as Avery on a normal office printer.
1. Choose your printer and label size
On SGT's Print Barcodes page, pick the brand and the exact paper. Over a hundred sizes are built in, from Zebra and DYMO rolls to Avery Letter and A4 sheets, Brother DK rolls and jewelry tags. If yours is not listed, choose Custom and enter the label size, gaps and margins.
2. Choose what goes on the label
Pick the code: barcode, QR code, both, or plain text. Then choose up to three lines of text: product name, variant, price, compare-at price, SKU, vendor, weight, tags or your own metafields.
3. Design it
The automatic layout works for most labels. To go further, open the Label editor: drag and resize each part, change fonts, sizes and colours, and turn the content if your labels feed sideways. Labels print every language and emoji.
4. Preview and test print one label
Use Preview with a product to see a real product on the label, then Test print a single label. In your printer's dialog, print at Actual size, not "Fit to page".
5. Fix alignment if needed
If the print sits a little off, open Fine-tune this paper and nudge it with Move right and Move down in millimetres. On sheets you can also adjust the margins and gaps. Save the template so every print uses the same settings.
6. Print
Tick the variants and set how many labels each needs, then print up to 5,000 labels at once as one PDF. SGT checks every code first and lists any that would not scan correctly.
Thermal printer tips
- Thermal rolls print black only. Colours and colour emoji print in black and white.
- Calibrate the printer after loading a new roll so it finds the gap between labels.
- Small barcodes need clean, sharp printing. If a scanner struggles, make the barcode wider.

Common questions
Can I print labels from Shopify without an app?
Shopify does not include product barcode label printing in the admin. You need an app or another tool to lay out and print labels.
Why is my label shifted on the page?
Usually the print dialog scaled it. Print at Actual size, then use Fine-tune this paper in SGT to move the print by a millimetre or two.
