How to add QR codes to Shopify product labels
A QR code on a shelf or tag sends a customer straight to the product page, with every size, colour and review.
What the QR code can hold
- The product page with this variant selected. Uses a link that keeps working if you rename the product.
- The product page.
- The SKU or the barcode, for scanning in your stockroom.
- Product name, vendor, tags, weight or a metafield.
- Your own text or link, with placeholders for SKU, barcode and product details.
Add a QR code in SGT
- On the Print Barcodes page, under Code on label, choose QR code or Barcode + QR.
- Choose what the QR code holds and whether links use your own domain.
- Set the size, and optionally colours and shapes in Advanced QR styling.
- Test print one label and scan it with your phone.
Make sure it scans
- Keep it big enough. As a rule of thumb, at least 15 mm wide on small labels. SGT warns you when the squares get too small.
- Dark code on a light background, with a small blank margin around it.
- Shorter content makes a simpler, easier QR code. Product links are short.
- Products that are draft or not published yet will open a page customers cannot see. SGT warns you before printing them.
Barcode and QR code together
A barcode is fastest at the till. A QR code is best for customers with a phone. With Barcode + QR, SGT gives the barcode the space it needs to scan and fits the QR code beside it.

Common questions
Do QR codes on labels expire?
No. A printed QR code holds its content permanently. Links keep working as long as the page exists.
Can thermal printers print QR codes?
Yes, in black. Thermal printers cannot print colour, so coloured QR codes print in black and white.
